2011 NHL draft: Guillaume Cloutier

Strong play in offensive-zone undermined by d-zone give-aways

Guillaume Cloutier is the 46th ranked North American skater on Central Scouting's mid-term rankings. He's a 6'1", 165 lbs right-handed defenseman with strong offensive instincts. He has 12 points through 61 games to go along with a plus-16 rating, and 30 minutes in penalties.

Cloutier demonstrated his offensive skills during a recent 5-2 loss to the Quebec Remparts on March 9th. He managed an impressive assist on a heads-up pass to a streaking forward.

Please keep in mind this is a ONE GAME GRADE, and should not be used to establish a long-term view of any player's potential. It is only through multiple game grades can we even begin to see strengths, weaknesses or trends form.

Period-by-period

The St. Constant, Quebec native's grade held steady most of the game; improving 6 percentage-points through the game's final 2 periods.

Individual statistics

Number 8's grade would have been substantially higher if not for 9 give-aways in the game; two in the neutral-zone, and 7 in the defensive-zone. He won 11 of 29 defensive-zone puck-battles, while also winning 12 of 18 offensive-zone puck-battles.

Cloutier's game will be quite impressive once his defensive instincts catch up to their offensive counterparts.
