2011 NHL draft: Huberdeau, Beaulieu, Phillips, Jurco, Oke, Tesink, Bourret (VS. Kootenay)

Single-game grade and risk/reward rating for draft-eligible St. John Sea Dog players compiled during  Memorial Cup loss to the Kootenay Ice May 24th.

Jonathan Huberdeau (#11) is the CSB's third-ranked 2011 North American skater. He's a left-handed shooting centreman who also plays the wing. He has a phenomenal stick with the ability to make plays in traffic. The only substantial negative in Huberdeau's game was his work in the faceoff circle, as he won only 3 of 8 total faceoffs.
-Game grade: 66

Nathan Beaulieu (#28) is the CSB's 5th ranked North American skater for the upcoming draft. The left-handed defenseman makes a solid first pass, is an above-average skater, but over-committed himself on a few occasions during odd-man rushes.
-Game grade: 71

Zack Phillips (#7) is a right-handed centreman with great hands. The 15th ranked North American skater has solid instincts in both zones, but failed on 7 of 10 attempts to beat opposing forwards 1on1. That said, his offensive-instincts are undeniable.
-Game grade: 66

Tomas Jurco (#13) is the 20th ranked North American skater for the upcoming draft. He was inconsistent in the defensive-zone; losing too many puck-battles, while completing too few pass-attempts. He did however use his speed to win 10 of 14 offensive-zone puck-battles.
-Game grade: 61

Scott Oke (#15) is the 44th ranked skater on Central Scouting's final rankings. Playing behind so many quality forwards limits Oke's ice-time significantly. He did however post the second-best grade among his draft-eligible teammates. He managed this with hard work in all 3 zones.
-Game grade: 69

Ryan Tesink (#19) is the CSB's 47th ranked North American skater.  He saw some playing time with his highly-ranked teammates, and showed flashes of skill. That said, he grade was hurt by his inconsistency during puck-battles, and his inability to complete offensive-zone passes. He ended the game with the lowest mark among his draft-eligible teammates.
-Game grades: 58

Gabriel Bourret (#5) is a right-handed defenseman who improved as the game progressed.  The 92nd ranked North American skater has the tools to compete, but took time to find his comfort level. Interestingly enough, Bourret had more success in the offensive-zone than the defensive-zone.
-Game grade: 61

Overall Risk/Reward

Huberdeau and Phillips posted the top overall risk/reward ratings of the draft-eligible prospects covered in this report. Huberdeau had the better numbers in the offensive-zone, but Phillips posted the better d-zone numbers.

Defensive-zone Risk/Reward

Beaulieu had the best defensive-zone risk/reward rating of the players scouted; slightly ahead of Phillips. Beaulieu's rating would have been even higher had he not lost more defensive-zone puck-battles than he won. That said, he competed an impressive 20 of 26 defensive-zone pass-attempts.

Phillips high d-zone rating was a product of his puck-skills and vision. He completed 8 of 9 defensive-zone pass-attempts, and all 4 of his attempts to beat opposing players 1on1. Jurco unfortunately posted a negative defensive-zone risk/reward rating. He lost too many d-zone puck-battles, while not being able to complete any of his 3 defensive-zone pass-attempts.
