Vs Toronto 2-0 loss October 7, 2011

Campoli with top grade prior to injury

The Montreal Canadiens lost the opening game of the 2011-12 season to the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night. The Habs were unable to muster any offense, losing 2-0.

Overall Grade

Erik Cole had the lowest grade among Canadiens players. Cole's 55 was the product of his inability to get the puck on net, as he was only able to get 1 of his 5 attempted shots through to the net. Scott Gomez (62) and Andrei Kostitsyn (62)had the second-lowest grades. Both players struggled winning offensive-zone puck-battles, and completing offensive-zone passes.

The top overall grade went to Chris Campoli. Campoli left the game early. As such, his grade was buoyed by the quality of play the Habs brought to the first period. Every other Hab player's grade fell through the second and third periods. Players with grades at-or-above the team average include Tomas Plekanec, Josh Gorges, Max Pacioretty, Yannick Weber, Hal Gill, and PK Subban.

 Overall Risk/Reward Rating

PK Subban (2.50) had the top risk/reward rating. Subban completed 38 of 45 attempted passes in the game. That said, one of his failed pass-attempts resulted in a neutral-zone giveaway, and an eventual goal against on the same play. Once again, buoyed by the team's strong first period, Chris Campoli had the second-best risk/reward rating.

Among forwards, Pacioretty had the top risk/reward rating, followed by Plekanec. Pacioretty completed all 9 of his neutral-zone passes, but was only able to complete 5 of 13 offensive-zone pass-attempts; killing many offensive forays. Plekanec completed 12 of 21 offensive-zone passes, but won only 4 of 8 puck-battles.

The lowest risk/reward rating belonged to Erik Cole. He won 7 of 15 puck-battles, and completed an impressive 10 of 11 offensive-zone passes.

Even-Strength Offensive-zone Risk/Reward Rating

All the negative risk/reward numbers in the offensive-zone help explain why the Canadiens were shutout. Players with negative offensive-zone risk/reward numbers include Gomez, Campoli, Brian Gionta, Kostitsyn, Diaz, Cole, and Gill. Many of these negative numbers are the product of two metrics; pucks through to the net, and completed passes. The Leafs did a good job of blocking shots in the game, while also using their sticks to block passing lanes. This resulted in low o-zone numbers for many Habs.

David Desharnais had the top offensive-zone risk/reward (0.67). Desharnais completed 5 of 6 attempted passes, while beating opposition players 4 separate times 1on1 (deak). Engqvist had the second-best o-zone risk/reward, followed by Mike Cammalleri. Both players won all 3 of their o-zone puck-battles.

Even-Strength Defensive-Zone Risk/Reward Rating

Josh Gorges had the top defensive-zone risk/reward rating. He completed 15 of 20 passes, while winning 10 of 11 d-zone races to loose pucks. Raphael Diaz had the second-best d-zone risk/reward rating. he won 4 of 6 d-zone puck-battles, and completed 18 of 24 d-zone passes.

Mike Cammalleri had the lowest d-zone risk/reward rating. He failed to block 4 passes that either went under his stick or through his legs, and lost the only d-zone puck-battle he engaged in.  Other players with negative d-zone risk/reward ratings include Travis Moen and Cole.

Even Strength Neutral-Zone Risk/Reward Rating

The top neutral-zone risk/reward rating went to Plekanec. Followed by Subban and Gomez. All three players n-zone risk/reward ratings were helped by their abilities to either carry or dump the puck successfully into the offensive-zone.

Players with negative n-zone risk/reward ratings include Travis Moen and Raphael Diaz. Moen lost both of his neutral-zone puck-battles, while Diaz lost 2 of 3 n-zone puck-battles.

Powerplay Risk/Reward

With Gill's powerplay risk/reward a statistical anomaly, Raphael Diaz had the top powerplay risk/reward rating. He completed  6 of 7 powerplay pass attempts, while successfully carrying or dumping the puck into the Leafs' zone on 3 separate occasions. PK Subban had the second-best powerplay risk/reward rating, followed closely by Scott Gomez.

How we calculate player grades and ratings

Overall grades include the usual metrics, as well as offensive-output and traditional plus/minus.  Each positive or negative event has equal value. A point scored (goal or assist) has a value of 2. A positive plus/minus adds a positive event to the grade, a negative plus/minus rating removes a positive event from the overall grade.

A players risk/reward rating is a determination of the difference between the average number of "good plays" and "bad plays" a player makes. This rating does not take into account offensive output or traditional plus/minus. The number is broken down to represent the average difference ("good plays" minus "bad plays") for each minute of ice time. The higher the number, the more successful plays a player made. A player creates a high risk/reward rating by completing passes, winning puck-battles, winning races to loose pucks, successfully getting the puck deep into the opposition zone, etc. Any unsuccessful attempts at the previous examples results in a negative event or "bad play".
