2012 NHL DRAFT: One-game Scouting Report for Ryan Culkin

Ryan Culkin is a 6'1", 185 lbs defensemen currently playing for the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. Culkin is in his second season with the club, and was the 89th-ranked North American skater on Central Scouting's 2012 mid-term rankings. During the game scouted, the left-handed defenseman skated well, showed good offensive-instincts on the powerplay, but had some difficulty finding his way in the o-zone at even-strength. This one-game scouting report is from a 4-1 loss to the St. John Sea Dogs on February 17th, 2012.

Keep in mind that this is only a 1-game scouting report, and as such should not be used to determine a player's long-term potential.

OVERALL GRADE

Culkin produced no offense in the game. He had a below-average grade of 64. His best work was done on the powerplay and in the defensive-zone.

OFFENSIVE-ZONE RISK/REWARD

Culkin produced a negative offensive-zone risk/reward rating, as such his ratio was a disappointing 0.83 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play.  Expressed differently, this shows that at even-strength, Culkin made more unsuccessful plays than successful plays in the offensive-zone. He lost his only o-zone puck-battle, completed his only pass-attempt, but failed to hit the net with any of his 3 attempted shots; typical for defensemen his age.

POWERPLAY RISK/REWARD

Culinpowerplay, and whenever Quebec was looking to create offense. He had an impressive powerplay risk/reward rating of 4.00, and a PP ratio of 2.5 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. Unfortunately many of his PP events took place outside of the offensive-zone. St. John did an excellent job killing penalties, making it difficult for Quebec to set up in the offensive-zone. As such, only 2 of Culkin's 14 PP events took place in the offensive-zone.
