2012 NHL Draft: One-game Scouting Report from CHL Top Prospects Game (4 of 4)

 

These 1-game scouting reports are from the 2012 CHL Top Prospects game. The game took place on February 1st, 2012. Team Orr won the game on a last minute goal by Branden Trook; other goal-scorers included Dillon Fournier and Griffin Reinhart.

The top overall grade among Team Cherry forwards belonged to #28 Coda Gordon and #91 Martin Frk (78). Frk is the CSB's 20th ranked North American skater, while Gordon is ranked 61st. Other skaters with above-average grades include #10 Dane Fox, and #11 Mike Winther

The lowest grades belonged to #16 Brendan Gaunce (52), and #37 Daniil Zharkov (59).

EVEN-STRENGTH RISK/REWARD RATING AND RATIO

The top even-strength risk/reward rating belonged to #10 Dane Fox.  Fox engaged in 2.79 events per-minute played, and his best work was done in both the offensive and defensive-zones. The next best rating was earned by #92 Martin Frk. Frk earned an impressive and significantly above-average rating of 1.92.

The lowest even-strength risk/reward rating was earned by #16 Brendan Gaunce

The top even-strength ratio was also earned by #91 Frk. Frk had a solid ES ratio of 2.67 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. Other players with above-average ratios include #10 Fox, #12 Wilson, #21 Scott Laughton, and #28 Coda Gordon.

OFFENSIVE-ZONE RISK/REWARD RATING AND RATIO

 #9 Andrew Ryan earned a disappointing offensive-zone risk/reward rating of -0.10, and an o-zone ratio of only 0.8 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. Expressed more simply, this shots that Ryan made more unsuccessful plays than successful plays while in the offensive-zone.  He recovered 3 loose-pucks, but was unsuccessful with either of his 2 attempted passes. He engaged in 0.87 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#10 Dane Fox produced an impressive offensive-zone risk/reward rating of 1.44, and an o-zone ratio of 1.88 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play.  He won 1 of 2 puck-battles, but recovered an impressive 15 loose-pucks. He was successful with only 6 of his 15 pass-attempts, and engaged in an impressive 4.71 offensive-zone events per-minute played. Fox's rating was the product of his ability to recover loose-pucks. Unfortunately once he had possession of the puck, he was more likely to lose possession than to maintain possession.

#11 Mike Winther earned an o-zone risk/reward rating of 0.48, and an offensive-zone ratio of 2.25 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He recovered 4 loose-pucks and was successful with 3 of his 4 o-zone passes. He  was able to get 1 of his 3 shot attempts through to the net, and he engaged in 1.25 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#12 Tom Wilson had an offensive-zone rating of -0.19, and an offensive-zone ratio of 0.60 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. Wilson made more unsuccessful plays than successful plays in the offensive-zone. He recovered 1 loose-puck and was successful with only 1 of his 3 passes. He engaged in 0.77 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#16 Brendan Gaunce earned an offensive-zone risk/reward rating of -0.10, and a o-zone ratio of 0.92 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He made more unsuccessful than successful plays while in the offensive-zone. He recovered 5 loose-pucks, but was successful with only 2 of his 7 o-zone passes. #19 Gemel Smith had an offensive-zone risk/reward rating of 0.29, and a ratio of 1.27 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He lost both his o-zone puck-battles, and recovered 7 loose-pucks. He was successful with 5 of his 9 passes, but only 2 of his 6 attempts to beat opposing players 1on1 (deke). He engaged in 2.4 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#21 Scott Laughton earned an o-zone rating of 0.48, and an offensive-zone ratio of 3.5 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He won his only o-zone puck-battle, recovered 1 loose-puck, and was successful with each of his 4 passes. He was unable to get his only attempted shot through to the net, and he engaged in 0.87 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#28 Coda Gordon had this group's second-best offensive-zone risk/reward. He had an o-zone rating of 0.77, and a ratio of 2.68 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play.  He won 3 of 4 puck-battles, and recovered 4 loose-pucks. He was successful with 2 of his 3 passes, but only 1 of his 4 attempted dekes. He engaged in 1.73 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#37 Daniil Zharkov had an offensive-zone rating of -0.10, and a ratio of 0.89 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. Simply put, he made more unsuccessful plays than successful plays while in the offensive-zone. He recovered 4 loose-pucks, but was successful with only 1 of his 3 attempted passes, and only 1 of his 4 attempts to beat opposing players 1on1 (deke). He engaged in 1.63 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#40 Dominik Volek earned an o-zone risk/reward rating of 0.67, and an o-zone ratio of 2.17 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He recovered 6 loose-pucks and was successful wtih 4 of his 7 offensive-zone passes. He was able to get 2 of his 3 shot attempts on net, and engaged in 1.83 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#91 Martin Frk earned an offensive-zone rating of 0.48, and an offensive-zone ratio of 2 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He recovered 4 loose-pucks, and was successful with 2 of his 3 o-zone pass-attempts. He intercepted 2 opposition passes, and was able to get his only attempted shot through to the net. He engaged in 1.44 offensive-zone events per-minute played.

#16 Brendan Gaunce had a d-zone risk/reward rating of 0.29, and a defensive-zone ratio of 1.5 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play.  He won only 1 of 4 puck-battles, but recovered 4 loose-pucks, and was successful with all 4 of his d-zone pass-attempts. He engaged in 1.44 defensive-zone events per-minute played.

#17 Tim Bozon earned a defensive-zone risk/reward rating of 0.29, and a d-zone ratio of 2.5 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. #91 Martin Frk earned this group's top defensive-zone risk/reward rating. He had a d-zone rating of 1.35, and an impressive defensive-zone ratio of 3.8 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. He lost his only d-zone puck-battle, but recovered 10 loose-pucks, and was successful with 6 of 8 d-zone pass-attempts. He engaged in 1.83 defensive-zone events per-minute of ice-time.

NEUTRAL-ZONE RISK/REWARD RATING AND RATIO

 The top neutral-zone risk/reward ratings belonged to #34 Zharkov, and #40 Volek. Volek recovered 2 loose-pucks, while Zharkov recovered 2 loose-pucks, and completed 2 passes.

The lowest n-zone rating was shared by #11 Winther, #17 Bozon, and #28 Gordon.

The most neutral-zone events were engaged in by #17 Bozon (1.06), and #37 Zharkov (1.15).
