HABS: Alex Galchenyuk; by the numbers

Galchenyuk a quality top-9 forward this season

Alex Galchenyuk is only 19-years-old. He is not yet expected to be the Montreal Canadiens offensive leader. The young forward has settled into his roll as a depth forward on a team that was in dire need of quality depth last season. In fact, it is this depth that has helped carry the Habs to their success thus far.

Galchenyuk has a below-average overall ratio of 2.08 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play. That said, he has an above average overall risk/reward rating of 1.40. This is because Galchenyuk doesn't kill penalties; forwards who regularly kill penalties will obviously produce lower OVERALL risk/reward ratings. Galchenyuk also has a high risk/reward ratings because he engages in more events (is more involved in the play) than the average forward.

At even-strength, both Galchenyuk's risk/reward rating and ratio are around the team average for forwards, while his powerplay ratio of 2.61 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful play is below average.

Galchenyuk's takeaway to turnover ratio and scoring chance for/against ratio are just slightly below average.

OFFENSIVE-ZONE

Galchenyuk has produced offensive-zone numbers in-and-around the team average for forwards. He has recovered more offensive-zone loose-puck than average, but has a below-average offensive-zone puck-possession success-rate.

Galchenyuk's passing and deking success-rates are below-average, but his success-rate getting shots through to the net is above average. He also has an above-average "true shooting percentage"(goals per attempted shot).

O-ZONE TENDENCIES

Galchenyuk has chosen to pass 58% of the time he has had possession of the puck in the offensive-zone. Only David Desharnais, and Brandon Prust have chosen the pass option more often. Twenty-four percent of the time number 27 has chosen the shoot option, while he has chosen to deke 18% of the time he's had possession.

DEFENSIVE-ZONE

Galchenyuk has engaged in more defensive-zone events per-minute than the average Montreal forward. He has recovered more loose-pucks, but has below-average defensive success-rates. These lower defensive success-rates are the product of a defensive-zone puck-battle winning percentage of just 53.3% compared to the average among forwards of 74.9%.

Galchenyuk's numbers with the puck in the defensive-zone are also below average, as his d-zone puck-possession success-rate is 6.1% below average. His d-zone passing-percentage is only 2.2 percentage-points below-average, but his success-rate when attempting to beat players 1on1 (deke) in the defensive-zone is only 25%. Also, his success-rate when attempting to dump the puck out of the defensive-zone is nearly 15 percentage-points below average.

D-ZONE TENDENCIES

Galchenyuk has chosen to pass 56% of the time he has had possession of the puck in the defensive-zone.  Forty-one percent of the time number 27 has chosen the dump the puck out. Only Travis Moen has been more likely to choose the dump-out option. Galchenyuk has only chosen to deke in the defensive-zone with 2% of his d-zone possessions; the lowest attempt-rate of any Montreal player.

NEUTRAL-ZONE

Galchenyuk is a strong puck-carrying forward; even at the NHL level. This is expressed in his solid neutral-zone numbers. He has an above-average neutral-zone ratio of 2.56 successful plays for every 1 unsuccessful plays. But, because he engages in less n-zone events than average, his neutral-zone risk/reward rating is not above-average.

His defensive numbers in the neutral-zone are also above-average, thanks to an impressive neutral-zone puck-battle winning-percentage.

His neutral-zone passing success-rate of 71%, and his dump-in success-rate of  80% are both above-average. But, his success-rate when attempting to beat players 1on1 (deke) in the n-zone is dangerously low.

N-ZONE TENDENCIES

Galchenyuk has chosen to pass 53% of the time he has had possession of the puck in the neutral-zone. No other forward has been more likely to choose the pass option in the neutral-zone.  Only thirty-eight percent of the time has number 27 chosen to dump the puck deep into the offensive-zone; making Galchenyuk the forward least-likely to dump the puck into the offensive-zone. The other 9% of his possessions have seen Galchenyuk attempt a neutral-zone deke.
